Ben was born and educated in Swan Hill before graduating from the University of Melbourne, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1997. After completing his residency at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, he began the General Practice Training Program in 1999. During this time, Ben developed an interest in sports medicine that led to being appointed as a medical officer at the Port Melbourne Football Club and then the Essendon Football Club. He is currently a medical officer with the Carlton Football club after joining them in 2001.

Ben was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2003 and since then has worked in general practice in addition to his commitment to sports medicine. His other passion, which is helping patients with substance addiction problems, has led to Ben being appointed as an admitting officer at the The Ivanhoe Manor – Warburton Unit, which cares for drug addicted patients.
